Cixi Institute of Biomedical Engineering (CIBE) is a research institute within the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CNITECH). It was established by the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology and Cixi municipal government in 2013. CIBE dedicates to improving human healthcare through the integration of the physical, medical biological, and computer sciences. The CIBE offers a world-class platform for biomedical engineering research, industrial application, and postgraduate research training where scientists, engineers, and clinicians work together to bear on the challenges of early diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of major diseases and conditions. The research of CIBE brings advances in fields ranging from the development of novel advanced screening and diagnostic techniques, biomedical polymer materials, and rehabilitation equipment and systems. The laboratories of institute of biomedical engineering have complete facilities to support academical research and industrial applications. The institute currently has 9 research groups with more than 60 staffs who were gathered from all over the world. It is worth noting that several distinguished scholars and groups have been selected into high-level talent programs: 1 expert has been selected in the national “Thousand Talents Program”, 5 experts Zhejiang provincial “Thousand Talents Program”, 5 experts CAS “Hundred Talents Program” and 4 Ningbo 3315 innovative talents/groups.
The CIBE - hosts 1 public testing platform and 3 disciplinarily platforms (include 3 biological laboratories, 3 chemical laboratories and 1 electroencephalography and sports medicine laboratory). CIBE is building on these advances by supporting pioneering research to develop new technologies and equipment. It is believed that such advances are capable of delivering substantial healthcare benefit, and to translate new engineering technologies into clinical practice.
The main research initiatives in biomedical engineering of CIBE can be split into three key areas, but are not limited to:
1. Advanced screening and diagnostic techniques
An extremely important part of the therapeutic process is to identify the disease at an early stage. The efficiency of therapeutic intervention and therapy are often attributed to early diagnosis. Therefore, advanced screening and diagnostic techniques are critical to early diagnosis and treatment of major chronic diseases.. Medical imaging and computerized image analysis can offer significant contributions in advanced screening and diagnostic. For example, artificial intelligence-based detection of lesions in retinal images is able to improve understanding of the disease mechanism, diagnosis and treatment of retinal and a number of systemic diseases, e.g. diabetes, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration. Automated analysis of the retinal image becomes an active research area in the field of medical imaging for its diagnostic and prognostic significance. As key point for exploring cellular environment and indicating cellular phenomenon, developing novel (implantable, energetically autonomous) and efficient biosensors will offer greatly promising methods for early diagnosis of diseases. In CIBE, the study towards advanced screening and diagnostic techniques such as precision medical imaging analysis, artificial intelligence disease diagnosis, surgical robot navigation, diagnostic reagents and kits, real-time monitoring system for cellular toxicity, imaging medicine and reagents as well as advanced medical imaging equipment will lead to a medical and clinical breakthrough.
2. Biomedical Polymer Materials
Biomedical polymer materials have been widely used clinically as functional materials or implants. CIBE focuses on the development of polymer materials, including wear-resistant UHMWPE, smart polymer hydrogels and biofunctional polymer hydrogels, etc., for joint implants, tissue engineering, 3D cell culture, or 3D bioprinting, through multidisciplinary researches across polymer synthesis, polymer physics, polymer engineering, biology, and engineering, etc.
3. Rehabilitation Equipment and Systems
The neurological diseases including nerve damage (i.e., Stroke) and neurological degeneration (Parkinson’s Disease, PD) have rapidly raised more and more urgent demands in rehabilitation and nursing under the ageing population trend in China. Rehabilitation equipments and service systems are among the top needs in healthcare industry in the next decades. CIBE is dedicated to developing rehabilitation robotics for stroke and PD patients, and integrating intelligent nursing and service systems for the elderly.
