On July 16th, 2015, Dr. Yan Jin was invited by the director of Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology —Professor Guilin Yang to give an academic report in Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology, CAS. Dr.Jin gave us a speech named 《Kinematic Analysis and Aerospace Application of a New Parallel Kinematic Machine》.
In this talk, Dr.Jin introducedus Parallel kinematic machines (PKMs). PKMs have attracted a lot of attention in the last three decades from research institutes to industry, due to their better performance than serial industrial robots. Although numerous types of PKMs have been proposed, only a few of them are practically used in industrial production. Exechon machine tool, which is evolved from the Tricept parallel machine and adopts an unique over-constraint architecture, is one of the recent successful developments. Also, the kinematic characteristics of this new machine tool wasintroduced, which include mobility analysis,Jacobian formulation, workspace analysis and dimensional optimization. The applications of the PKM machine tool to implement automated aircraft assembly (high performance milling and drilling) was presented, too.
Dr Jin has been a lecturer in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast since January 2009. Prior to that, he worked at the same school as a research fellow since February 2007. He obtained both his Bachelor and Master degree in mechanical engineering in Dalian University of Technology China, in 1998 and 2002 respectively, and received his PhD from Nanyang Technological University Singapore in 2007. Dr Jin’s research interest is in parallel kinematic machines, robotics automation, digital lean manufacturing, high performance machining, and production management, with a particular focus in aerospace manufacture. Dr Jin has been a principal investigator for a number of research programmes, funded by DTI, EPSRC, Royal Academy of Engineering, Invest Northern Ireland and industry (e.g. EADS/Airbus and Bombardier Aerospace Belfast). He is a member of editorial board of International Journal of Robotics and Mechatronics. He has been an organising chair or member for a number of international conferences such as ICRA2014 and ReMAR2015. Dr Jin has published over 60 peer-reviewed technical papers. He is a Chartered Engineer, a technical committee member in Robotics cluster in IFToMM, and a member of IEEE.
